Masaai Boy
Masaai Boy by David Shultz
Portrait of a striking Massai Boy with traditional white face paint during the transition period of becoming a man. My husband and I wanted to go to Africa for an adventure to see the animals and learn about new cultures. After landing at Kilimanjaro Airport, we met our guide and immediately started making the journey to Ndutu for the migration. Ndutu is north and between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. On our way we passed many Masaai villages and stopped to say hello. We discovered this young man during the Emuratta ceremony, which means "coming of age." In this ritual, Maasai boys are circumcised and the boys paint their faces white, mimicking bird patterns. The boys must remain in black clothes for the healing process which can take months to fully recover. The day before the ceremony, boys must sleep outside in the forest. When early dawn approaches, they run to the homestead and enter with an attitude of a raider. Such an incredible and special moment!
100% of the proceeds for every print sold goes to charity.
Every purchase of fine art photography is printed to order using archival papers and inks.
